Product FAQs
TRUE TOW WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION HITCH FAQS
Q: Does the True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch work on an aluminum frame trailer
A: Yes, the largest A-Frame that our weight distribution hitch can fit on is a 2.5″x6″ frame, so as long as it is that size or smaller, it should work!
Q; Does the True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch add to tongue weight?
A: Add it to your Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR); our calculations take the weight of the hitch into account and distributes it.
Q: I’ve only received 3 out of 4 boxes!
A: This hitch ships in four separate boxes and sometimes they are delivered at different times or on different days. Please wait at least 48 hours from receiving your initial package before contacting our customer support team about a missing box. Watch Video
Q: Can you back up with the True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch?
A: Yes you can back up with your hitch attached as long as you’re not backing up a steep driveway or anything that is a significant change in grade.
Q: Can I use air bags with my True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch?
A: Yes, you can. The purpose of the weight distribution hitch is to return any weight that is lost off the front axle of the tow vehicle when the trailer is attached. It is not meant to take away all the squat in the truck. The tongue weight of the trailer still exists and is added to the back axle causing compression on the springs. If you would like to reduce that remaining squat in the back of your tow vehicle, feel free to use airbags or any other anti-squat system. Just make sure you check that your DTW (Distributed Tongue Weight) is correct for every tow with or without airbags.
Q: What if the lead screw is not turning before reaching the DTW?
A: If the lead screw is not turning, there are a few things you can check to solve the problem.
- Make sure the lead screw is not bottomed out. The lower the pivot system only has so much travel and will bottom out between the interval gauge shield and the top of the pivot system. If this is the case, raise the height of your trailer bracket platforms and again, try to adjust the screw until you reach your DTW.
- Has your lead screw been serviced with grease lately? Make sure to use the grease ports and bi-annually (if not more frequently) pump in grease to keep the frictional surfaces lubricated. Without lubrication, it can increase friction and wear, keeping the lead screw from turning.
- Large amounts of torque may be needed. With large trailers reaching the maximum ratings on the hitch, sometimes the loads require large amounts of torque to adjust the lead screw. If this is the case, raise the tongue jack to lower the forces on the lead screw. Adjust the lead screw in or out, depending on what is needed, and put the tongue jack down periodically to check if you have reached the required DTW.
- Check your tow vehicle ratings and make sure you are not towing over the weight capacity.
- Check that all measurements and the tongue weight without the spring arms attached were inputted correctly into the DTW tool to ensure you have the correct DTW.
- Try jouncing(stepping on or kicking) the front of the trailer on the trailer frame. Doing this takes away any resultant friction keeping the gauge from working correctly.
- Your tongue weight is less than 200lbs. If your trailer tongue is less than 200lbs., the gauge has a hard time reading this low of a tongue weight. Please increase your tongue weight to be over 300 lbs. to confirm your gauge is in fact not working.
- Hydraulic oil is leaking. Without hydraulic fluid, the gauge will not read weight. If you see any clear odorless oil leaking from the hitch, please check all hydraulic plugs, gauges, and the piston under the tow ball to see if one of these is leaking. If so, please contact our Customer Support team to get your True Tow hitch repaired under warranty.
Q: Why does my truck still have some squat?
A: The purpose of the weight distribution hitch is to return any weight that is lost off the front of the axle of the tow vehicle when the trailer is attached. It is not meant to take away all the squat in the truck. The tongue weight of the trailer still exists and is added to the back of the axle causing compression on the springs. If you would like to reduce that remaining squat in the back of your tow vehicle, feel free to use the air bags or any other anti-squat system. Just make sure you check that your DTW (distributed tongue weight) is correct for every tow with or without airbags.
Q: My truck is still squatting a ton?
A: If you feel that your truck is still squatting more than normal even after you have adjusted the True Tow hitch to read the DTW that you determined from the DTW tool, double check the following:
The DTW should be about 2-3 times more than the original tongue weight of the trailer. If this is not so, something must be wrong. Please contact our Customer Support team so we can look further into resolving this for you.
Q: My True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch is leaking hydraulic oil.
A: If you see any clear, odorless oil leaking from the hitch, please check all hydraulic plugs, gauges, and the piston under the towball to see if one of these areas are leaking. If so, please contact our Customer Support team to get your True Tow hitch repaired under warranty.
Q: My True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch isn’t working?
A: If you notice the gauge is not measuring tongue weight, there could be a couple causes for this. Please check the following prior to calling our Customer Support team:
Q: The paint is starting to wear off, what do I do?
A: The True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch is painted with a high-strength powder coating for rust and corrosion resistance. Through normal ware, especially in high-friction points of the hitch, the paint could rub or chip off. If you are seeing this, you could use a flat back primer and paint to touch up these areas to reduce rust and corrosion, which will extend the lifespan of your hitch.
Q: Is the True Tow Weight Distribution HItch compatible with any of your other hitches?
A: NO. The True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch has all of it’s own parts and components made specifically for the True Tow Hitch. For example, even if you have our Steel Weigh Safe Adjustable Ball Mount, you cannot use that draw bar with your True Tow WD system. Only the draw bar that came with the True Tow is compatible with its components as it has a reinforcement piece made specifically for the True Tow Hitch. However, you can use your Steel Weigh Safe Adjustable Ball Mount Slider Rack on your True Tow Weight Distribution draw bar!
Q: Is the True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch compatible with my current aluminum Weigh Safe Drop Hitch?
A: NO! Our True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch is made of steel and is not compatible with any of our aluminum components.
